Shoddy carpentry work! Not The Finishing Company.

Here is a picture of a newel Post I removed today while preparing a staircase for some brand spanking new boxed newels.

There are many ways to attach newel posts to walls and stair rail but a couple of Brad nails is definitely not the way to go. This trim carpenter didn’t even use wood screws!

Brian repaired an unsafe railing and banister on my new townhome. He was prompt and professional and the railing is now secure, safe, and looks great! Here is a video of the railing before and a picture of the braced post that is now stable and secure. Highly recommend.

Unbelievably unprofessional! I have tried contacting twice for jobs in my home as I’d seen FB posts displaying beautiful work done by this carpenter. The first attempt, I had to follow up repeatedly just to be told no since he works alone and can’t do the custom doors I wanted. The second time was for an accent wall, which I knew he could do because I’ve seen previous jobs. After my email was ignored, I followed the advice in another of his FB posts and text him. My first texts went ignored. I then I got a FB message saying it is easiest to text for contact. (Rolling my eyes). We finally connect through text and I’m just flabbergasted at the conversation that unfolded. I was told my desired design might not work (which is fine) but then thrown a number and asked if I want to proceed. No meeting. No consult. No measurements. I asked for a formal estimate and got more instructions about giving a 1/3 deposit —— I have never even met this person or talked on the phone. Then I get a lengthy text explaining why my previous messages were ignored. Through the typos, I was able to deduce that he gets a lot of estimate requests for work that people aren’t really prepared to pay for so he disregards them. I was shocked! After explaining that I am more than prepared to pay for any job I commission, his response was “better late than never”. I posted pics of our text conversation. I’ll let the company speak for itself — would you hire them? UPDATE: Called me immediately after I posted my review and argued with me about it! Had him on speaker phone, my mom was sitting nearby as a witness shaking her head. When I could get a word in, I tried explaining to him my issue but he was very fired up about my bad review ruining his livelihood. Said he doesn’t think taking a while to get back to someone or saying “better late than never” are rude or unprofessional actions. I told him people will decide for themselves. But I’ve made my decision for sure since the first time I’ve ever spoken to Brian was when I posted a review on Google that he didn’t like. Will not EVER hire!

This company is amazing! I wish that I could provide a 10 star rating! I hired this company to install a new staircase railing for the downstairs and upstairs. I could not be happier with the quality and craftsmanship provided. The attention to detail was far beyond any other repair work I have contracted in a long time. Brian replaced our existing wood spindles with decorative iron balusters and it has given our home a brand new look! Brian installed crown molding throughout our house and corrected some poorly-done crown molding that had been done previously. Brian replaced over 100 builder grade balusters with these. He was very professional from the beginning to the end. He answered all questions promptly and wasn’t put off that I was asking them. Brian traveled daily from Richmond to Manassas (quite a trek) and each day he left the job site as clean or cleaner than he found it. His work speaks for itself. I searched for about 4 months trying to find a company that I thought would be reasonable in cost and one that would answer all of my questions (and I always have a lot!). Brian was awesome before he even started the work. I had so many questions and he was very responsive and then the end result!!!!! I am so happy with the work and the time he took to cut and install each piece was impressive. I suffer from anxiety when the house isn't clean. I actually can't wait until contractors leave so I can get it back to "my normal", but Brian cleaned up better than any contractor that I have ever dealt with. I was able to focus on the craftsmanship and beauty of my project after he left instead of focusing on cleaning (I know that sounds crazy, but it's true). I am so satisfied and I still look at it everyday as if it were the first day. I would recommend this company before any other in the DC Metro area. Thanks for an amazing experience.

Brian did an excellent job replacing my wooden balusters with wrought iron on my stairs. He even reinforced a stair post that had been wobbly for the last couple years. He left the area probably cleaner than it was when he arrived and a few times he cleaned as he went. Brian was very professional and polite. I live in Woodbridge so I was quite pleased to have such a great quality trim carpenter willing to travel. Great craftsmanship! We didn't want to take on the cost of refinishing our floors but wanted to upgrade the look of the space. Brian did not disappoint. Brian and his brother came in and did chair rail and shadow boxing in her foyer and stairs. They were fast, efficient and didn't cut any corners (no pun intended). I'm very pleased with the outcome, so much so that he's coming back to do crown molding in our whole downstairs. If you need a carpenter locally (we are in Midlothian) look no further than The Finishing Company. You can't go wrong.
